Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to empower students to embrace their bilingualism and celebrate their identities. As a first-generation Mexican-American, I understand the importance of seeing your culture and language valued in education. Growing up, I didn’t have access to dual language programs, but my parents instilled pride in being bilingual. Teaching allows me to create a space where students feel proud of who they are, excel academically, and develop the skills to thrive in a diverse world.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moment was when a newcomer student shared his first story in Spanish about his migration from Mexico. He wrote about a cherished Christmas with family and the challenges of adapting to a new life. Seeing him proudly share his story with classmates highlighted the power of language and storytelling to build connections and foster belonging. It was a reminder of why I love teaching in a dual language program, celebrating identity and empowering students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would buy classroom supplies to accommodate students' needs and resources like bilingual books, technology for interactive learning, and culturally relevant materials. I’d also help create workshops for families to support bilingualism at home. Additionally, I’d develop a makerspace to foster creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking in both languages, empowering my students and celebrating their diverse backgrounds.
