Tell us why you became a teacher

For me, education is synonymous with freedom. This has been my philosophy since high school, during which my favorite teacher taught me how to read, write, and critically debate a wide array of issues through multiple lenses on topics such as health care, the economy and other social issues. These experiences and my upbringing in the Bronx inspired me to pursue a career as an educator who teaches urban, high school youth to read, write, and consider the world in this way, too.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Teaching is all about relationships. Kesean was a 7th grade student who I taught during my first year of teaching in 2014. He struggled, but came to office hours almost every day, initially because I asked him to & gradually because he wanted to. I taught him again in grades 8, 9, & 11. Kesean & I are in touch today & his vibrant personality & ability to speak & relate to people has made him successful in the car industry. The impact of this relationship continues to guide the work that I do.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am in the process of working toward my dream of launching a creative leadership & writing program/business for high school students, so I would be able to further that dream by winning this money. Additionally, I would provide my parents with some money to assist them in paying for much-needed home renovations. After that, I would donate a chunk to causes that positively impact youth and perhaps have some left over to save or take a vacation.
