Tell us why you became a teacher

From a young age, I saw how a teacher’s passion and humor can bring learning to life—thanks to my 5th-grade teacher, Mrs. Brill. While I initially wanted to become a lawyer, working as a camp counselor and director made me realize my true calling was working with kids. Teaching lets me combine my love for helping others with my belief that learning should be hands-on and engaging, which is why project-based learning is at the heart of my approach.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was during my first year, which was mostly remote due to the pandemic. When we returned in person, my 5th-grade students surprised me one day in May by inviting my principal and assistant principal into the room. They presented me with a book they made, with each student writing a page thanking me. As they read their pages aloud, I was moved to tears. It was the proudest moment of my teaching career and reminded me why I do this work.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If given $25,000, I’d first invest in my students—upgrading classroom resources, adding books, and improving hands-on project materials. I’d also allocate funds for my own professional growth, such as further certifications in educational leadership or training to be a better teacher. I hope to earn my endorsement and become a Chief School Business Officer eventually. The rest of the money will be invested, to model proper fiscal responsibility.
