Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I’m fantastic at explaining things, especially Spanish and Literature. I would always help my friends in college all the time, and they constantly told me I should teach. They were right. That first day I met my students, I was hooked. I have spent 20 years working solely with at risk populations, and I can’t imagine a better way to spend my life. It’s about giving back to the community through your life’s work.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The story I first thought of was this. The first student who ever walked into my classroom 20yrs ago, died tragically 10 years into my teaching career. I was shattered, and to top it off, she left behind two very young children, and it was right before Christmas. I told my current students I wanted to get her kids some Christmas gifts. Those high school juniors & seniors pulled together the best Christmas I’ve ever seen! It was a beautiful testament to how much my then students loved me too.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would purchase some technology for my classroom, some Chromebooks or tablets and chargers so my students could work when their technology is lost or broken and they can’t afford to replace it. I would also get a lot of supplies for fun classroom activities & art projects related to Hispanic culture. Finally, I’m a single mom, so I would pay off some debt so I can help afford to send my oldest to college. This money would change our lives, and help so much.
