Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I realized that during the school year, teachers actually see students more than their parents do! This degree of impact struck me so deeply. Now, as I am seeking my masters in Trauma-Informed Education, I realize that schools and educators can actually serve as a catalyst for healing. Data shows that almost 75% of children experience at least one adverse experience - and I want to increase student resiliency and build hope!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a new student join our kindergarten class. She often came to school dirty and unkept, but she loved school and had a thirst for knowledge. I worked with her everyday to catch her up. Finally I told her, “You know all your letters now! I’m going to show you how to use these letters to read! You’re ready for this!” As she began to read, tears streamed down my face. She didn’t have the nicest clothes or even a hairbrush, but no one could take away her education. She was a reader!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use it to help pay off my Master’s degree - I only have one more semester left. I would also love to start saving money to start a family! My husband and I are beginning to feel ready for that new chapter, so we would love to have some money saved back. We would also use the money to travel overseas because it’s always been my dream to visit another country!
