During my younger years, I was plagued with family barriers such as parents divorcing, moving from school to school and the difficulties of fitting in. During my last move, I met my high school band director. He was truly my life saver. To be able to mitigate through the emotional dysfunctions of an emotionally-challenged minority student has become quite heroic to me. He provided things that no other mentor could at the time. He is why I became a teacher: to pay it forward!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My first teaching gig was not one that I would have selected to be my first. I had trained rigorously to become a leading band director and there I was, teaching a steel pan band. I was nervous about taking the gig, thinking that I lacked the knowledge to succeed. Boy, was I wrong! I figured, instruments are instruments, but the theoretical knowledge surrounding mastering them is very similar. Once I learned the kids, their various styles of learning and how to teach them, we took off!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am in the process of applying for a 501C3 for starting a community band in my area. I believe we are in need of such a group due to the high amount of amazing retired teachers, professors, and instrumentalists who possess that strong desire to keep playing. Membership in this group will be extended to current students as well. My hope is that our love for music will unite us all, both young and seasoned musicians. The funds will surely assist in this endeavor!
