Tell us why you became a teacher

Serving my community as a teacher is my way of giving back. I became a teacher to show students how to love learning math. Math has always been my favorite subject in school. I love having an impact on students' lives. It brings me joy when a former student tells me, “The way I taught math made sense and being in my class changed their perspective on math.” Also, it is rewarding to know that I steered students in a positive direction after leaving my class.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience this school year is when the Principal announced that the Math Department's scores on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Test showed more growth than the English Department's scores. The English Department percentage of growth has always been higher than the Math Department. This has not happened in my nineteen years of teaching here at Cheyenne High School. I was so proud of my colleagues, myself, and our students.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use it to purchase fruits, healthy snacks, and water for my class of the month or have it for students that are hungry at school. I would purchase gift cards as incentives for my students of the month. I would pay off a personal loan and use part of it for a down payment on a house or do updates in it. I would send my mom $1000 for her birthday, donate $1,000 to charity, donate $1000 to the Sunshine Committee at my school, and put $5,000 in savings for any future emergencies.
