What is your favorite part of being an educator?

Seeing my students smile while they learn, have an “Ohhhhh!” moment, realize their potential, and grow. Each and every one of them is an amazing human being and I’m always conscious of that as they walk in the door for the day. I never want a student to feel lost, discouraged, or disengaged and spend a great deal of time working to make our classroom feel welcoming and positive. Some of my greatest memories teaching have just been silly conversations and side-tracks that we have!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience.

One might be using War of the Worlds to teach during the initial outbreak of COVID-19. My students were scared, misinformation and panic were everywhere, and so I used the story, radio play, and stories about its broadcast both here and in South America to teach about panic, the importance of level-headed and accurate information, and how viruses spread. Kids went to the nurse to tell them everything they’d learned about COVID and they were blown away. Certainly helped to ground us!
