What is your favorite part of being an educator?

The best part of being a teacher is knowing that I am planting a seed in each of my students. My words and actions mean something. So,I strive to make learning fun, engaging, and relevant to the real world. I love to see kids working together on various projects and having conversations about their learning. The best of all is when I see a student years or decades later and they ask, “Ms. Rebon, remember when we did that project? Or do you still do the Hot Chili Peppers?”

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience.

I was teaching 8th grade. A year following the 9/11 attack on our country, I wanted to stand in solidarity with the thousands of families and friends who lost loved ones. So, I invited my students to participate in a Day of Rememberance for the victims and families of 9/11. All 150+ kids voluntarily agreed to participate. Every 45 minutes, I took each of my 7 classes to stand in silence across Rt. 31 holding the American Flag, Carnations, and Posters as we read each name. Cars beeped in support.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I told my students almost 20 years ago, I don’t know when or how, but I am going to have money to spare one day, and my one desire is to knock on the doors of strangers and hand them money. One of my students raised his hand and said, “Ms Rebon, will you knock on my door?” So, if I win….10,000 = $500 to 20 strangers I will approach in different venues. $5K - School District, 5K - Family/Friend/Church/Shelter. 5k My Memoir Print/Publish.
