Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a special education teacher to make a meaningful difference for students by preparing them for life after high school. I believe that equipping them with social/life skills is a fundamental part of that process. I find it incredibly rewarding to work with students on things like communication, independence, and building confidence, all of which will serve them well in their future.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Attending the Unity conference in Washington, DC with students from my school who are part of the Nez Perce Tribe. It was an incredible opportunity to not only immerse them in an empowering cultural event but also to support them in a way that was tailored to their individual needs. My students have individualized education plans and being able to provide the accommodations they needed so they could participate and succeed was a truly rewarding experience.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would start an 18-22 program for our school to provide students with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed after high school. As we are already in the process of creating one, I see it as a great chance to integrate life skills, transition planning, and career exploration into a comprehensive program.
