Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because my educational experience was not the best. My parents were immigrants from Iraq, Baghdad and could not speak English. Therefore support at home was difficult. I was left to depend on my teachers. That was a dead end! The teachers only had one method of teaching and I was given a consequence for not understanding. They criticized, name called, and paddled me when the concept was too difficult to comprehend. That experience inspired me to become a loving teacher!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable teaching experience was the year that I was privileged to teach the most amazing group of 4th grade students that inspired me to think outside of the box! This group of students endured many hardships and challenges at home that made it difficult to succeed in school. I decided to transition my classroom into a cozy home environment that motivated students to learn and come to school excited! It didn't stop there! I took the entire class on an epic summer camping trip!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would be beyond grateful to be awarded $25,000. I would love to take family trips to places we haven’t seen, and share my experiences with my students. My mission will be to create a Pay it Forward Program at my current school. In the last several years, I have seen a need for helping students and their families with basic needs. I would purchase clothing, hygiene items, non-perishable items, and create baskets for celebratory times. Lastly, it would be a dream come true!
