Tell us why you became a teacher

To encourage curiosity, ignite a passion for knowledge, create a safe space for self expression, and empower students to advocate for themselves and strive for success, whatever that means to them. Even after the most challenging of days, I wanted to come home knowing what I do matters, and has a purpose. I found that in teaching.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There was a student in my class that severely lacked confidence and self belief. She would only speak in a whisper, if at all, even to friends. I regularly praised her academic abilities, and worked to build a relationship with her. Mid year she stood up and answered a question loudly in class. Everyone was amazed. Now she is thriving in school, and I’ll always be grateful she felt safe enough in my class to be heard.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As I teach at a title 1 school, I would use part of the money to help fund field trips. This would provide an opportunity that many students may not otherwise get. All students deserve new learning experiences and enrichment.
