I had a high school teacher who absolutely instilled in me a love of learning. I take with me that challenge daily - what can I learn today? I believe my students know that I truly care for them as people who are all poised to become wonderful contributors to society. By challenging students to step outside of their comfort zones and exude kindness whenever possible, we become a community of learners.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable experience is impossible to pinpoint. Each victory in the classroom means different things. Today, two special education students came to me and begged me to accept them into my semester two classes. They were unhappy in their current placement but I had no openings in my classes. They asked if they could come in and eat lunch with me. It would be easy to say no, but my belief that some of most important educational moments occur outside of the traditional classroom stands.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to augment our school travel program by awarding a student with a summer travel scholarship. A colleague and I started traveling with students prior to Covid and as soon as we could travel again we did! Travel has long been my therapy by recharging my "teacher batteries." While some would be saved for future retirement, there are many more travel experiences on my bucket list!
