Teaching high school science means curiosity, controlled chaos, and core memories made between experiments
Thank you for supporting Brooklyn McElroy in this year's competition. Your donations and participation will benefit The Planetary Society in their mission to advance space exploration, inspire discovery, and empower the next generation of innovators.
I became a science teacher because I love creating experiences students enjoy and remember years later. Teaching allows me to spark curiosity and build confidence while preparing future mothers and fathers, engineers, doctors, nurses, scientists, politicians, entrepreneurs, and world leaders. Every lesson helps students learn to think critically, solve problems, and use science to shape their futures and improve the world around them.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceCow eye dissection day brings squeals & laughter. Students hesitate at first, holding tools carefully, but curiosity quickly takes over. As we explore the anatomy of the eye it becomes a story of how vision works. What starts as “gross” turns into excitement and questions. It is messy, memorable, and a perfect example of how hands on science makes learning stick for years
What would you do with the $25,000?If awarded $25,000, I would help restore Lebanon High’s Heath Stadium Grandstands, condemned due to crumbling concrete and rusted steel since 1957. This historic space hosts football games, track meets, graduations, and community events. I want to give back to the students and community who welcomed me with open arms by helping preserve a safe, meaningful gathering place full of memories and school pride for future generations.
